Welcome!

Hi my name is Mae and below is all my media work that i have done so far this year. I hope you enjoy looking through my blog!

Thank you!

Final music video

Final digipack.

This is my final digipack, i had a few technical problems with it but in the end managed to create what i wanted. The drawn circles are to keep with the theme of the album and i also changed the font of writing as the one i wanted could not be put on and this one also matches better to how the theme goes. I enjoy photography and so i thought to put in some pictures would both look good and show the bands personality.

Final advert.

Final evaluation question 1.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Digipack
My digipack has used forms and conventions of real media products. This is because the main thing i used from real media products was to have the lead singer on the front of the digipack. this uses forms and conventions of real media products as many of the covers of digipacks have a close up image of the lead singer. the reason that i used the lead singer on the front of the digipack was because the main singer would be well recognised by the audience. As are all the lead singers on the front of digipacks of real media products.
An example of a real  media product that i used was Christina Perri's album cover. The reason of this was because i liked the use of the camera centralising her as many people would recognise her if they were to buy her CD. This then when i decided i wanted to have a close up image of Laura in the centre so that the first thing you would look at would be Laura. Also on the Christina Perri album the text was not too big and this also meant the the image was not over powered and so was focused on better.

The ways in which i developed this was by changing the angle of the shot  by making Laura stand completely straight on. i did this to give off a powerful effect of the lead singer to make her look strong and represent the type of band she sings in. I also changed the way the artist would look, i decided to go for a more serious approach as this would match better with our video. The more straight serious look also went well with the type of band THE DEJECTED is and shows the type of album it is. Another thing that i changed from the Christina Perri album on mine was the black and white. i decided to keep mine in colour as i though it may not stand out enough if it was to be in black and white and most of the album was plain colours except for the images. So i chose to keep all my images in colour to make it more appealing. However as for my digipack linking to the video i used the same costume for the photos as were used in the video. I did this because i wanted it to connect with the audience  and allow them to recognise the band from the music video and also recognise the type of band they were from the way they were dressed as Laura is dressed grungy and so it would appeal to that type of audience.

Advert
My advert has used forms and conventions of real media products as I have a photo of the whole band together as a Central image on the advert and this helps to show the audience who they are. It also helps to connect with the audience as they can see what they look like and recognise them for the music video. This is used from forms and conventions and real media products and real media products use and image from within a digpack or album on the advert and rarely use the image of just the main singer for the advert. this is because it allows the whole band to be shown and known of and this is why i chose to have a band image on my advert. This picture of the full band also helps to show off the personalities of each band member through the expressions of their faces. I have used  and researched this from many band adverts for example The Ramones. Although The Ramones music does not match my bands music, the photos that have of their band show off their personality just by pulling a face or standing in a particular way for example Josh (right) has his arms folded. I did this as i wanted my band to come across serious but also look fun by having Laura pull a face.

Other ways in which i used forms and conventions from real media products was by having a record label at the bottom of the advert to show who supports this band. This connects with the forms and conventions of real media products because they all have record labels on them. They have they because they have to be signed up with someone in order for them to produce and album and be well known. I used this so that whoever looked at the advert would recognise the label and view what type of music they do by the record label they are with. The record label that i used was wind up which is a well known record label for many soft rock and rock bands. Therefore i chose wind up record label as it connected with the type of band THE DEJECTED is because of the sort of music they produce. Forms and conventions from real media products that i used would be the use of persuasive words for example, 'out now'. I used this because its gives of an important message in that you should hurry to by it as it will sell quick. I also had songs that the new album would include as this give the audience a taster of what they could be buying. I used this as it worked well with the type of advertising i was going for as i wanted to promote the new music video as well as the digipack and this is why i put that it included the song save me as this was our video that we did. This is like real media products as they have their most popular or newly released songs on the advert so that people know it well already and so will want to hear more. Another form and convention that i used was putting the bands website on the bottom of the advert so that people could check the band out before going out and buying their album. I have seen many adverts do this and thought i looked effective and also allows the audience to view what the band gets up to. I used the QRcode that is now very popular on all phones so that people are able to download songs straight the way and so get a taster of what my band has to offer. I used this as many real media products have this now because of how popular phone apps have become.

Music video
My music video has used forms and conventions of other media products for example the costume i have used is very popular in music videos at the moment.  The style of grunge is popular because many young people are wearing it at the moment and so are celebrities and so to help to connect with the audience and the bands music type, the grungy look went well. The use of a pretty dress with grungy boots on a female artist is used in many music videos for example Christina Perri's video, Jar of Hearts. In her video it shows her to be wearing a pretty dress with a grunge twist to it for example the boots. Also the make up of  Christina Perri inspired how our main singer would look with the smokey eyes. It inspired me as i thought it showed off a good emotion well and also matched with the grungy but pretty look. It did this as the black and smokiness of the make up looked grungy however the outline of eyes made it look pretty. I also liked the way that it made the eyes stand out so the lead singer could get a real connection with the audience. We then decided to use this on the boys in the band, they had eye-liner on to go with the theme of the eyes standing out to give emotion.

As for the mise en scene  in my music video the use of a field was used because of the deserted feel. We like this as it connected to the type of song we chose in that she felt all alone, also to use forms and conventions of real media products as fields are very popular as a background. We got this from the music video by Paramore, brick by boring brick. This was because in that video the main singer was in a field and the way she used the trees and layout of the field looked effective. It showed how it can be a lonely place and allows he audience to just concentrate on her. This is one reason of why we chose to use a field for our video and main singing parts as it meant the the people watching would be concentrating on the singer and her emotion rather than what was going on in the background.

The idea for the mise en scene for the band was taken from Evanescence, my immortal (3:16) band part. This again meant we are using forms and conventions of real media products. We used the band scene from this video as it was just what i and Laura had in mind and it also gave us the idea of our band being on their own without the main singer for the first part of our video as we thought it looked effective and also connected with our story in that the main singer felt alone. We also liked the use of an empty room, this was because it made the instruments and band members to stand out which again meant that the audience was focused on the band rather than what was going on in the background which can happen in some videos.

It was important for us to equally divide the shots of the main singer and the band as we wanted both to be centre of attention and for not the singer to be the main attraction. This is the only thing in which we challenge the forms and conventions of real media products. This is because in real media products music videos of band the band are in the background and never noticed much yet the main singer everyone knows about for example Evanescence my immortal. We wanted to challenge this as we wanted the whole band to be known about and be seen lots of time in our music video so that it wasn't just all centred around the main singer.
However another thing that our Media products use from forms and conventions of real media products is that it shows a story that matches with the lyrics. Many real media products do this for example Beyonce's if i were a boy. Although that style of music does not match our the use of a story connecting with the image is there. We wanted to do this as we thought it made the music video much more interesting. For the song that we had chosen 'Save me' we got the story by listening to the lyrics and then looking at how different shots would fit in with the pace and words of the song. An example of this would be in our song when our lead singer in writing the letter, she write the lyrics 'confessing my sins' from the song down as it matches well together and also fits in with the story we are getting across.
